Guess what this is:
In the words of Gomer Pyle,
“Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!”
It’s my new favorite knitted baby gift. Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Baby Surprise Jacket. Way too much fun to knit. I had just enough of some of my hand-spun, hand-dyed yarn to knit it with too. I have to find the perfect buttons and stitch it up for a new baby boy. You can find it in The Opinionated Knitter and Knitter’s #56 (Fall ’99).
I had such a good time knitting it (great mindless TV knitting), that I’ve already cast on another in cotton for the baby my brother and SIL are adopting. They live in Arizona, so I think wool would be a bit unwelcome, don’t you?
Praise God! I am glad you posted – I was wondering how the appointment went. I am very happy for you and for Daniel too.
It is nice to hear that Daniel is right where he should be. And that the meds are really making him less animated.
animated…oh I’ll BET!
teehee.
This post made me so happy on so many levels..
and now I’ll be walking around all afternoon
saying the Gomer Pyle bit.
Aren’t those sweaters just the greatest?
Somebody did a GORGEOUS adult one…
I can’t remember who
off the top of my head..
sigh.
Hugs.
What a relief Jean! I am so glad for all of you. And the doctor–bonus!! Now good luck fatten your guy up. Just wait till you all move back to the States…lots of fun food awaiting him here. 🙂
Thrilled for the great news about your boy.
Also love the baby sweater. Just hearing Elizabeth Zimmerman made it intimidates me………
I love the baby sweater!!
I wouldn’t get overly worried about Daniel’s weight, unless he is grossly underweight. I have 2 ADD kids. My oldest was on Ritalin for many years and is tall and very thin. Ritalin did affect is appetite and I used to worry alot. Many years later however (he’s 22 and does not take anything anylonger), he is still tall and skinny. My next to the youngest has been on both ritalin and now concerta……is bone thin…..and she eats like a HORSE! Both myself and my husband were very thin children and all of my other children have been on the thin side.
I’m so happy to see that things are looking up for you and your family!
Good news re the visit to the doctor. and the baby sweater is great – I really must do some Elizabeth Zimmermann things. Yours is an inspiration.
Great news from the doctor. And better thin than too heavy (oh, don’t I know!)
Jean,
That’s wonderful news for Daniel and for you and Dan. What a relief that he is thriving, if a little thin. I am so relieved for all of you.
Your baby surprise is going to be a great surprise. :-} Beautiful job, Jean, as usual. After seeing your jacket, I’m wracking my brain for people expecting babies to knit this for. That is, after I finish all those other projects. ;-}
I just checked your blog to see your BSS — Super! I lived in Arizona, NM, Co for 28 yrs before coming back East — tell me where in AZ they are and I can give you an idea if wool will work well or not!
Jean, that’s wonderful news about Daniel! I’ve been lurking not knowing exactly what to say, but hoping that all turned out well and empathizing with your anxiety and frustration. Good luck, and hope you continue to find ever better support resources for dealing with Daniel’s Asperger’s.
Jean, what a relief! You’ve been on my thoughts and prayers lately, after I read your previous post. Turns out we have quite a few complicated things going on healthwise in my close family right now, so I think I am praying more than usual…
Keep it up! Daniel is in such good hands, and being so bright, with his parents’s help he will find his niche in life.
Hugs,
Marta
I’ve been reading your blog and I’m glad your son can continue to take his meds. My youngest, now 19, has taken medication for ADHD since he was about 6. He was (and stil l is) thin, but he’s healthy! He was on the shorter side until HS and then he shot up to 6’3″. I am an AF brat who married an AF guy (twice actually!). I know how the medical system overseas can be frustrating – you will have many more resources once you are back in the States.
I was praying for you on Wednesday for your doctor visit. I’m so glad things are going to be okay for you with the same meication. It’s scary to switch medications.
